Every year we have in-library contests, like "Find Waldo!," Reader of the Week, Riddle of the Week, Mystery Place of the Week and the annual guessing jar. Stop in to see if you can win a prize!
Special Events
- Pint Size Polkas with Mike Schneider, Tuesday, June 28, 1:00PM A full 45-minutes of live polka music! No registration required.
- Sock Hop!, Wednesday, June 29, 2:00PM No need for dancing shoes, but come ready to hokey pokey, bunny hop, and do the chicken dance. Fun for all ages. No registration required.
- Mr. Tricks Juggling Show, Tuesday, July 12, 2-2:45PM Everyone is invited to watch the spectacular tricks of the Mr. Tricks Juggling Show. Come for the fun, the tricks, and the adventure. After the performance up to 40 children, ages 10 and up, can register in advance for a 1/2 hour juggling lesson/play time from 3-3:30PM. Reserve your spot by July 8th.
- Slimy, Gooey & Gross Science Experiments! Wednesday, July 27, 2:00PM Learn how to make slime, a "foamerator" and other fun science experiments. Definitely come dressed for a mess! This program is best for kids entering 1st through 5th grades. Register by calling 767-4905 by July 25. Limit 30.
- Fishing for Laughs with Curt Strutz, the Bassmeister: Tuesday, August 2, 2:00PM Back by popular demand! A fishing comedy show for kids and families. No registration required.
Fun for Babies and Preschoolers
- Babytime! - Mondays in June (June 6,13,20,27) 10-10:30AM This baby storytime is designed for children from birth to 18 months old and features songs, rhymes, lap bounces and stories. A supervised play area will be set up for older siblings.
- Preschool Story Times - Tuesdays, 10-10:30AM(toddlers) 10:30-11AM (4 and 5 yr/o)See the preschool story time schedule for themes.
Family Fun
- Movie Nights - Wednesdays, June 22, July 6, July 20 - 7pm Join us for Yogi Bear (Rated PG), Cars (Rated G), and Tangled (Rated PG). Movies begin at 7pm. Feel free to bring your own snacks. We will provide popcorn. No registration required.
Fun for School-Age Kids
- Lunch Bunch - Thursdays in July 12:00-1:30pm Bring a sack lunch and eat while you listen to a couple of chapters from Travels with My Family by Marie-Louise Gay and David Homel. Adventure, trouble, and lots of laughs follow a family of four (plus one cat) as they travel all around North America. We'll have dessert for you and then some fun games to play and crafts to make after we eat. Lunch Bunch meets four times. This program is great for kids entering 1st thorugh 5th grades. Register for the series or individual days by June 27. Limit 15.
- Your Story in Pictures: Storyboard Workshop, Thursdays, June 9, 16, 23, 10-12pm Join us to write your own story in pictures. Learn how to make a storyboard to sketch out your own comic book story. Bring ideas or sketches for a story you want to tell, we'll provide the supplies to get started. Taught by illustrator, matt Laznicka, whose most recent work has appeared on the cover of Popular Mechanics magazine! For ages 10 and up. Limit 15. Register by June 8.
Fun for Middle Schoolers and Teens
- Battle of the Books - Black Earth Library vs. Mazo Library- Friday, July 29, 2PM at Mazo PL Fifth through eighth grade readers can form teams of 2-4 members to represent Black Earth or Mazo libraries in the third annual Summer Battle of the Books. Black Earth is hungry for a victory after losing both years to Mazo! Win great prizes! Register individually or as teams by July 1st to get your list of the eight books.
- Online Teen Book Club Blog about your summer reading when you join the teen book discussion club. Up to 52 libraries may be participating. Librarians will moderate the discussion and e-mail addresses will not be displayed. The discussion will be available June and July, possibly going into August. Check http://teenread.scls.info/ for more information.
- Flexible Friday Fun - June 17-July 22 - 1-5PM Fridays are for 12 yr/old and up. This is your day to play computer games, Wii games, watch movies you pick or have a craft day. Show up on Friday, June 17, for Wii games and we'll set the schedule for the rest of the Friday afternoons...your choice!
